About Us
Dr. Pradnya Gadgil
Dr Pradnya Gadgil is a Senior Consultant in Paediatric Neurology with a special interest in complex Epilepsy. She has had a career and training span across India and the UK. After graduating from BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, Mumbai with honours she completed her training in Paediatric medicine in the UK. Thereafter she trained in Paediatric Neurology and Complex epilepsy with a focus on epilepsy surgery in centres of excellence. In Mumbai, she did a fellowship at PD Hinduja Hospital - mentored by Dr Vrajesh Udani. In London, she trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital which is a quaternary paediatric neurology centre and a referral centre for complex Epilepsy and Epilepsy Surgery in the UK.

Mission
Epilepsy is a neurological medical condition commonly seen in children below 17 years of age. However, most people are unaware of this condition, the reason being lack of education, incorrect understanding, absence of scalable infrastructure and social embarrassment. When families face this situation, they do not know where to go and what to do. In many places of India, this is considered to be a taboo and this condition is called by lewd names. That is where we come in. Our mission is to spread awareness about Epilepsy and make the medical science of Epilepsy accessible and affordable to the masses in India using our expertise.
Vision
Epilepsy is a common neurological condition. Epilepsy affects 1 in 200 of the population (WHO). 60 to 70% of epilepsy across all ages is treatable with medications. However, 30% of patients have epilepsy that does not come under control or get cured with medications. Almost half of these are surgically remediable i.e curable by Epilepsy Surgery.
The treatment gap in epilepsy across all ages is quite stark in India. It is crucial to target this treatment gap. Institutions which work on a public-private partnership model can provide access as well as infrastructure and skillsets needed to deliver cutting edge treatments.
Epilepsy Is not only a medical condition but also a social disease. The awareness is limited and, myths and misunderstandings abound. Even for patients and families who have well-controlled epilepsy, living with epilepsy needlessly becomes more difficult. This adds to the psychological and financial burden of the disease.
These two issues i.e. trying to bridge the medical treatment gap as well as making epilepsy a more acceptable condition to live with is a humongous task in the Indian context. We should all start chipping away at this bit by bit. It is possible- other countries and regions have managed to largely address the social burden as well as close the treatment gaps.
